While Unreal Tournament was not the first Unreal game to feature modding abilities, it was definitely the one where Unreal modding came into its own. With the great mods like Tactical Ops and too many others to name, gamers could go weeks without playing the same mod twice. These mods competed against the great Quake 3 mods and more then held their own. Though the gaming world has left it for dead, Unreal Tournament and its modding community have proven to be a force to reckon with and several of these mods still reside fondly on the hard drives of thousands of gamers worldwide; a proven testament to the quality of these mods.
One of the catalysts of the Unreal Tournament mod community was the MPlayer.com sponsered $150,000 Make Something Unreal Contest. The main difference between this contest and the one for UT2004 was that the community voted on the winners instead of Epic.
